engaging the audience

Almost as much as pictures of politicians in silly hats, political staff, especially those who work in war room situations, love to get photos or videos of their opponents giving speeches, especially if those photos and videos have some audience member or fellow candidate in the background looking bored.

What better way to show how out of touch your opponent is, how lacklustre his campaign is, how devoid of vigour he is!

For instance, there's presidential candidate Rick Santorum's yawning son

and the bored school kid in this photo with UK Tory leader David Cameron

and these dozing McCain supporters.

All amusing, especially for these candidates' opponents. Could it get any worse? Ask the kid in the audience for this speech by presidential candidate John F. Kennedy.
